HBNSC Waupaca Flanders Spring Classic Training Ride
The second Spring Classic ride of six scheduled had eleven cyclists go up against the weather forecast to get a great 50 miler in starting from Gotta Hava Java in Amherst this morning. I elected to ride to the starting point and the rain stayed away until the last ten miles of my return trip home with the route graphed out above. 36 degree temps and rain aren't the best combination when finishing a long ride up while getting totally soaked and chilled. For next weekend the weather is looking even worse as we have the Point du Nord Spring Classic training ride that combines pavement and gravel roads for almost 80 miles. We had half dollar sized snow flakes two years ago. It's modeled after the Hell of the North European Classic on the very same weekend and we may just get those conditions that a few of us like. The route doesn't have the climbs that some of the other weekends bring, but the length, weather and variety of road conditions can lead to plenty of bonking riders as the pace gradually gets higher in the last quarter of the ride. Each year the Spring Classics bring together a small group of cyclists looking to improve upon there fitness before the Summer months arrive. The best part can actually be the friendships that develop and the stories from the rides that are shared while having a good cup of java after the rides. Ride on...
