Warmer Weather?
This morning my computer shows 23 degrees for the outside temps. Pretty toasty considering that the last three days of commuting to work have seen an array of temps, but nothing even close to being above the freezing mark. This morning I'm going to try to get a good hour on the way in to spark some energy into my lifeless body before I start my long day of retail in a bike shop with only a few days of shopping left before Christmas. After losing an employee to black ice this week, yesterdays shop talk was all about studded tires on our commuter bikes. I'm still going back and forth on weather or not to spend the extra money on them for the extra traction and some added safety while being out on the roads with cars this winter. I've survived the last two winter just fine, but this weeks events have me wondering if I'm just luckier then others.

You have forgotten more than I'll ever know about riding a bike below 32F (and above in many ways). You know the risks. If you must ride a 2-wheeler on ice and snow, then I'd offer that you should spend whatever money it takes to be safe, but that choice likely leads to other tradeoffs.

Too many people die in planes because they get in a hurry and/or make a series of bad choices, often about the weather and needing to get somewhere by a deadline. You don't hear stories about the guys that decided to wait it out or take the car. Accidents sometimes have no pre-condition, they just happen. Do everything you can to cheat the accident.

Your brain is the best safety device you have going for you (no chuckles mdc). Use it well.

I didn't/don't intend a lecture. I care. There's 2 other very large reasons at your house that don't want to contemplate spending life without you.
