What a relief it is to have the Chequamegon Fat Tire 40 weekend finally past. As late as midnight on Friday night I had doubts about racing on Saturday morning after the WORS race at Kewaskum which was a disaster both mentally and physically. Saturday morning started with a mild heat wave that killed the cold forecast of 30 degree temps by getting into the low 40's for the start at 10am. With people asking me how I was going to finish, the only answer I had for them was to ask me at the end of Rosie's Field if I could survive the pavement roll out and what I call the minefield that is known as Rosie's Field where the race really begins on the Birkie trail. Again on the start I flashed back to 2003 when I got taken out on Hwy 77 and earned an ambulance ride. Halfway down Hwy 77 the "Big One" happened again with what sounded like a dozen bikes crashing off to my right as I took immediate action by heading into and through the ditch to avoid being part of the carnage again.
After this close call I chased back to the tail end of the start field to safely make it through Rosie's without blowing up and rode steady and hard all the way to the finish at Telemark with no real issues for a very rewarding 46th overall in 2:21:38. I had my bike dialed in perfectly for the Fat Tire course and thanks again to all my sponsors (Specialized Bicycles, Hayes Brakes, SUNringle Wheels, and Ergon) for all the great support and products. I want to also thank my wife and daughter for the great race day support with water bottle hand-ups and their much needed cheering at double "OO" and the finish line.
Other Fat 40 Highlights
- Jesse (CreepyFriendly) LaLonde winning the 40 on a SINGLESPEED.
- Having Gary Fisher at our table for breakfast on Sunday morning.
- Riding the awesome Ojibwa singletrack at Telemark w/ Chris Strout, Mark and Big D before the long drive home.

Congratulations Scott
Hey Scott: Great race effort...I tried to hold your wheel heading out onto the first gravel road, but there was NO WAY!!!! A top 50 finish in this year's super packed field is a major achievement for an "old guy!" :)

after somehow not ending up being pack fodder in the Hwy 70 debacle, you did GREAT - I love racing in low temps! See you @ Iola!
Great job Scott!
